Recasting a movie role is rarely a quiet event. An actor steps into a part that someone else already shaped, sometimes after cameras have started rolling. They also carry the weight of a different face already attached to the character.
The nine performances below come from very different situations, from emergency replacements to long franchise handovers. Each actor found a different way in, and the public record of those choices says a lot about the craft.
1. Christopher Plummer in All the Money in the World

Kevin Spacey was removed from the film in late 2017, only weeks before release. Director Ridley Scott chose to reshoot Spacey’s scenes with Christopher Plummer as oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. The reshoots were reportedly done in about nine days.
With so little time, Plummer’s approach was about speed and precision. He had been Scott’s first choice for the part before the studio settled on Spacey. The performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor.
2. Mads Mikkelsen as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
