There’s a stubborn idea that fiction belongs to the young, that the great debut arrives in a writer’s twenties or thirties. The shelves tell a different story. Plenty of enduring books came from people who had lived whole other careers first.

The seven writers below all published a first novel at 50 or later. Each case comes with a publication date and a birth date, so you can check the ages yourself. Where a writer’s history needs a caveat, such as earlier nonfiction or children’s books, the entry says so.

Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell was born in 1820 and published Black Beauty in 1877, when she was 57. It was her only novel. She wrote it late in life, after years of poor health that limited her mobility, and she died only months after it appeared.

The book is told from a horse’s point of view and was meant to encourage kind treatment of animals. It has stayed in print for well over a century and is regularly counted among the best-selling novels in English. Few debuts, and few one-book careers, have lasted so long.

Raymond Chandler

Raymond Chandler was born in 1888, and his first novel, The Big Sleep, came out in 1939, when he was around 50. He had worked in the oil business and lost that job during the Depression. He then turned to writing for pulp magazines, which gave him his start in fiction.
