Losing a lead actor is one of the riskiest things that can happen to a TV show. Viewers bond with a face and a voice, so a swap can feel like a betrayal. Yet some series have pulled it off, either by recasting the same character or by shifting the story to a new lead.
The nine shows below are well documented examples. Some used in-story tricks, others simply carried on, and the results were mixed. Here’s how each one handled the change.
1. Doctor Who

The BBC series, which began in 1963, built the replacement into its premise. When William Hartnell left the title role, the show introduced regeneration, which let a new actor, Patrick Troughton, take over in 1966. That clever device is a big reason the show has lasted for decades.
Since then many actors have held the role, including Tom Baker, David Tennant, Matt Smith and Jodie Whittaker. Ncuti Gatwa took over in 2023 as the Fifteenth Doctor. It’s the clearest example of a show where changing the lead is part of the design.
2. Bewitched

Bewitched, the 1960s sitcom, replaced an actor playing the male lead. Dick York played Darrin Stephens in the first five seasons. Dick Sargent took over the role from the sixth season onward.
