Literary history loves a prodigy, but the shelves tell a quieter story. Some of the books people return to most were written by authors who had spent decades doing something else first.
The ten writers below each reached their defining title after turning fifty. Their routes differed, and so did their genres. Each one shows that a writing career can start late or hit its peak late.
Laura Ingalls Wilder

Wilder was born in 1867 and spent most of her adult life as a farm wife in Missouri. She also wrote for farm newspapers. Her first Little House book, Little House in the Big Woods, came out in 1932, when she was sixty five.
The series drew on her childhood on the American frontier. It grew into one of the most recognizable sets of children’s books in the country. Eight books followed, and a ninth was published after her death, so the late start produced a long shelf of work.
Frank McCourt

McCourt spent about thirty years teaching English in New York City public high schools. He didn’t publish a book until he retired. Angela’s Ashes, his memoir of growing up poor in Limerick, Ireland, appeared in 1996 when he was sixty six.
The book won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 1997. It was adapted into a feature film in 1999. McCourt later wrote two more memoirs, but this first one remains the title most readers link to his name.
Raymond Chandler
